The project's objective is to sail around the Mediterranean using a yacht powered by a clean carbon-free auxiliary motor (petrol motors are commonly used in yachts for all manoeuvres in port).The yacht will be presented for the first time at the Paris Boat Show in December 2009. A 12m craft built by the RM shipyard of La Rochelle, the "Zero CO₂" will be equipped with an electric motor driven by a hydrogen fuel cell, developed by CEA Liten of Grenoble, France.

Floralis, the technology transfer subsidiary of the University Joseph Fourier, Grenoble, will be responsible for the integratrion of a scientific platform on the boat that will be used to capture important scientific data on man-made pollution throughout the 6 month expedition. The yacht will travel around the Mediterranean coast on a journey;
